SEO, GEO, SEA: the secret of (AI) search engines

Get found on Google, Bing and in AI answers – and see in one place where you stand.

Whether new customers find you is decided in three places today: in the regular search results (SEO), in the answers of ChatGPT and co. (GEO) and in the ads above the results (SEA). We measure all three, improve what works and show you where things stand in the visibility dashboard.

Three ways to be found

What SEO, GEO and SEA stand for

Three abbreviations, one goal: whoever searches for what you offer should end up with you. Each way works differently – and each one can be measured.

SEOSearch engine optimisation

Your pages appear in the regular search results on Google and Bing – without paying for clicks.

What we measure

  • clicks, impressions, positions and queries from Google Search Console
  • clicks and search terms on Bing
  • visits and traffic sources with Matomo
  • load time and technical health (Lighthouse, site audit)

What we do

  • titles, page descriptions, sitemap and structured data
  • content for the search terms that bring enquiries
  • fast, technically clean pages
  • Google Business Profile for local search

Example

A page ranks 11th for an important search term, just behind page one. The weekly report lists it under “almost on page one” – a sharper title and a paragraph on the question behind it are the next step.

GEOOptimisation for AI search engines

ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity mention and link your company when someone asks for what you offer.

What we measure

  • whether AI assistants mention your company for your customers' questions – and who they name instead
  • what the AI says about your company and whether it is correct
  • visits via AI assistants and fetches by AI services
  • eight sliders in the control panel, each with current and target value

What we do

  • answer pages for your customers' most important questions
  • llms.txt and structured data from your company profile
  • the same company details everywhere
  • mentions and reviews on other websites

Example

Asked “Which joinery in Berlin builds fitted wardrobes to measure?”, ChatGPT names three competitors but not you. The control panel shows which slider has the biggest lever – for example missing mentions on other websites.

SEASearch engine advertising

Your ads appear on Google right away, above the search results – you pay per click.

What we measure

  • cost, clicks and conversions per campaign, straight from Google Ads
  • what visitors from an ad do on your website (matched with Matomo)
  • cost per enquiry or sale

What we do

  • plan, set up and steer campaigns
  • exclude search terms that do not fit
  • matching landing pages
  • check that enquiries and sales are reported to Google correctly

Example

A typical finding: purchases from the shop have not reached Google Ads for weeks, so the campaigns optimise blindly. Matching the figures with Matomo brings this to light.

Visibility dashboard

All figures in one place

In the client dashboard your website has its own “visibility” tab. It shows the key figures from all sources, explained in plain language – no account, no password, on your phone too.

  • Visits and sources. How often your website is visited, including via ChatGPT, Perplexity and co.Matomo on our own server
  • Google search. Clicks and impressions; positions and queries in detail in the weekly report.Google Search Console
  • Bing. Clicks and impressions – Bing also powers the web search of ChatGPT and Copilot.Bing Webmaster Tools
  • Fetches by AI services. How often ChatGPT, Claude and co. read your pages.server logs, if your website is hosted with us
  • Checklist. Reachable and encrypted, readable for AI services, sitemap, company details, llms.txt, page descriptions.our own check
  • AI visibility control panel. Eight sliders with current value, target and adjusting screws, biggest lever first.our measurement of AI answers

If you run Google ads, we evaluate cost, clicks and conversions per campaign as well.

Weekly report

A report by email every Monday

Figures alone do not help much. The weekly report puts them in context and says what to do next.

  • Overview. Clicks and impressions on Google, week against previous week, plus the trend over twelve weeks.
  • Where do you rank on Google? Page and position for your important search terms – and what your audience types into the search box.
  • Almost on page one. Pages in positions 4 to 20 where work pays off most.
  • Visitors, Bing and AI visibility. Visits and sources, Bing figures and whether ChatGPT and co. mention you.
  • Technical check. Findings from the site audit, such as broken links or missing page descriptions.
  • Plain-language assessment. Three to five tips of the week, as a short priority report if you prefer – as a PDF attachment.

The weekly report is already running for Reuther Media clients (in German).

What we promise

What measuring can do – and what it cannot

We show developments over weeks. We do not promise positions on Google or in AI answers.

  • SEO takes time. First movements often show after a few weeks, noticeable effects after a few months.
  • AI answers vary. The same question does not always get the same answer; we evaluate the trend, not the single hit.
  • We cannot measure Google's AI overviews. We see Google search itself through Search Console.
  • Some figures need your approval. You grant us access to Search Console, Bing and Google Ads; we see fetches by AI services if your website is hosted with us.

FAQ

What clients want to know first

What is the difference between SEO, GEO and SEA?

SEO gets you into the regular search results on Google and Bing, GEO into the answers of AI assistants such as ChatGPT, SEA into the paid ads above the results. SEO and GEO work long term, SEA right away – as long as you pay for it.

Do I need all three?

No. The foundation is SEO, because AI assistants search Google and Bing live: if you rank well there, you also have better chances in AI answers. Ads are worth it if you need enquiries quickly or want to try out a new offer.

Where do the figures come from?

From Google Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools, Matomo on our own server, Google Ads and our own measurement of AI answers. We measure load time and technical health with Lighthouse and a site audit.

Do I need to install Google Analytics?

No. We measure visitor numbers with Matomo on our own server.

Do I need a new website?

No. We work with your existing website, whether Joomla, WordPress or Shopware. If we already look after it, many things go faster.

Where can I find social media?

Social media now has its own page under Services: the right channels, profiles, an editorial plan and automatic posts. To Social Media →
